Zululand Observer 11 February 2001
A female Great White shark weighing just under 2,5 tons was found off Five Mile
beach, Richards Bay early this morning (Wednesday). The shark, the largest cought
off Richards Bay, was an estimated 4,5 metres and 10 years old. According to Richard
Gumede of the Natal Sharks Board in Richards Bay, the shark was cought at drum
experiment number nine during a routine patrol. She had taken a baited hook at
the drum, a new method of shark control from Australia for bather protection.
Mr. Gumede said the Great White, which is found more frequently in summer, was
already dead otherwise his staff would have tried to tag and release the monster.
At present there are nine drums and four nets in operation along Richards Bay
beaches. The shark will be transported to the Natal Sharks Board headquarters
in Umhlanga.
